50 Incredible Rap Songs You Need To Hear

I don’t post enough (shit, enought in general) about my love for good hiphop. Oh Word is doing a week of the “50 Incredible Rap Songs You Need To Hear NOW!” they are releasing 10 songs per day and doing little write ups on why they think the track is incredible.

It’s wednesday as of this writing and they have release 3 sets of 10 tracks so far:

They have also posted a link to all the songs in 1 zipfile. It’s at the bottom of the paragraph before the track listing on the links above. Keep checking the site daily for some more goodness.

So far my faves:

  • Pete Rock & Large Professor – “The Rap World” (High School High Soundtrack, Atlantic, 1996)
    Damn, Large Professor…
  • Guru ft Kai Bee & Lil Dap – “The Way it Iz” (Priority, 1997)
    Come on… its Guru!
  • Nas – “Amongst Kings” (White Label, 1999)
I’d have to agree with my friend Peter, Nas has skills.
  • J-Live – “School’s In (Original Mix)” (Raw Shack, 1998)
I love the beat on this track.
  • Fat Joe – “Shit Is Real (Premier Remix)” (Relativity, 1994)
I’m not a huge fan on Fat Joe but he carries himself very well on this one. Damn, he was 16 at the time.
  • Big L – “Dangerzone” (Columbia, 1995)
Not on of my faves of his, but still pretty decent. “Flamboyant” or “Deadly Combonation” would have been one of my choices.
  • Prefuse 73 f/ Mikah 9 – “Life/Death” (Warp, 2001)
I’m a big Freestyle Fellowship fan cept,”Everything’s Everything” would have been a selection of mine.
  • Raekwon – “Sneakers” (Loud, 1999)
Raekwon the Chef serves up some love to Sneakers. Gotta love the Wu.

Who would I wanna see on here?

  3. Haven yet listened to the songs attached to this zip file, connection sucks here at work, but to add to your list of who I’d like to see:

The Roots (In my opinion the best hip hop group out there bar none)
A Tribe Called Quest(Phife and Tip have the skills)
    Murs(Real L.A. hip hop)
Hieroglyphics(Yes Oakland provides more music than E-40)
    Blackalicious(View previous comment :) )
    Jurassic 5(5 MC’s make’em sound like 1)
    Public Enemy(Chuck D, enough said)
Black Starr and Assoc.(Mos, Talib, Common[counting him as part of this])
    The Streets(Brits can rap too)

I can probably keep going but at that point I might as well start my own page :)

  4. The links for the files are dead. By the way, have you guys listened to the Lupe Fiasco album? Its the only new stuff I like right now.
