When I was 10 I got my first small computer, a TI 91A that connected to the TV. When I was 12 I got my first PC and cut my teeth on applications like WordStar, Harvard Graphics and Windows 2.0. I’ve been working a 9-5 job since I was 18 years old and like most, I started out in retail then quickly moved to working an office job and haven’t looked back since. Keeping a job as been challenging mainly due to the economy and how its affecting the businesses I’ve worked for. The economy is tough and I see it getting tougher. I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to start my own business and provide my customers with all the skills that I have available to them vs just my Sysadmin skills with some added flare peppered in. Usually I’ve worked as a Systems Administrator supporting server hardware and occasional user focused help desk support, but I have more than that to offer. Aside from Windows / Mac desktop and server admin (you can read my standard resume here). I’ve also “dabbled extensively” in the following:

WordPress custom theme and plugin development – I’ve converted Dreamweaver, Frontpage and Hand-Coded HTML into great looking WordPress powered websites. By leveraging the extensive plugin repository that WordPress has available, along with custom plugin development your site can be dynamic, rich and interactive.

WordPress administration – Both large and small scale websites. From your cats website all the way up to a website listed on Google news with millions of page views; I can monitor, backup, optimize and keep your WordPress website running in tip top shape.

Website search engine optimization – Without using weird trickery, spamming, splogging or any of that nonsense, I can take your website to the next level by using Google Analytics, strategic keyword selection, title optimization and meta description optimization. I’ve done this for many of my personal websites and all of my client websites with great results.

Audio and Video Podcasting (podcasts are audio / video files delivered over the internet usually via iTunes or some other service) – I have extensive knowledge in what it takes to record, edit, author, apply ID3 tags and post audio and video to be received by millions of listeners / viewers all over the world. From iTunes, YouTube, Vimeo or any other hosting service, your message or show can get out to many people on the internet.

Live streaming of Weddings – I’ve coordinated live video streams from distant countries bringing families together to see a family member get married. I’ve utilized unconventional methods such as iPhones as “microphones” to an iPad behind the podium to get your friends and family as close as possible to the special day when being there in person just isn’t an option.

Live streaming of Meetups - I regularly provide a live stream at meetups for people to “attend” when they are traveling or out of the country via Skype, Ustream, Justin.tv and Google+ Hangouts. Utilizing a combination of Google Docs, web based chat and a video stream I can, for the most part bring the external users into the meeting and help them interact as if they are there. All of the services used are free and work on just about any computer and internet connection.

All encompassing In-home IT support – I’ve been known to provide my customers with all aspects of support including: Taking a client to the store, helping them select their new computer, install, configure, remove “crapware”, install antivirus, install antispyware, setup router, wifi, filesharing and printer sharing all in one day. By having one person take care of any or all of these tasks, I can save you time and the frustration of working with a new computer and connecting it your network or internet connection.

Covering live events – I’ve streamed video from distant countries, archiving captured video and overlaying live twitter and facebook streams so you have a snapshot of what was happening in the world while it was happening during the event. I’ve also have reported live from events posting to Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and YouTube the lastest news and announcements.

Social Networking – I’ve streamlined and / or automated many aspects of social networking to get the word out there about a product, service or even your most recent blog post or press release using social networking such as twitter, flickr, youtube, facebook, google+, delicious and reddit. By utilizing my services you are saving yourself time and money sending out updates to social networks.

Public Speaking – I’ve presented on many of the items listed above primarily: Social Networking, Podcasting, WordPress and Audio / Video live streaming.

Last night I was playing with Social Cam and accidentally clicked on a “send to my contacts” button and neglected to select any of my contacts. Well it ends up when you do that it sends to ALL of your contacts. If you got an email, txt, or pigeon/owl at your door it’s because I’m dumb and shared a video with you (all of you, like, work.. family, friends, people I haven’t talk to in ages.. yeah, everyone I know and kinda know.) My phone was blowing up last night and even still today with people wondering why I shared a video of Chris and I watching swing dancing at Downtown Disney.

The scary bit about this is just how many of you went to the link, downloaded the app and watched the video.. woah, my notifications center on my iPhone was going off with the number of people signing up to watch the video. 10 of you last night installed, setup an account and jumped a few hoops to see my video. That either means that you trust me soo much that you just jumped in and signed up or you REALLY wanted to see that video I sent you. Either way, Socialcam isn’t a bad software (an “Are you sure you want to spam everyone on Valentines Day at 9pm” would have been welcomed), I actually use it all the time to record videos and post them quickly on the web. I typically use it at concerts and live events to “cover an event”.

Sorry I hit you up at 9pm last night, enjoy the app though

Last week Mojang the maker of Minecraft released Minecraft Pocket Edition for iOS. Pocket Edition has been out for a while now on Android they finally released it on iOS. I love Minecraft, I play it on my Mac at home and my son Chris and I have spent quite a few nights playing multiplayer using on media server building all sorts of great structures and contraptions. Lastly my youngest daughter has been wanting to play but we’ve found that the controls on the computer are too hard to use “WASD” just isnt something she can get he head around. Switching over to arrows didnt help either. Since the Minecraft PE supports multi player gameplay (only via wifi not bluetooth) it’s great to play while at home together. Chris (iPhone 4), Jess (iPad 2) and I (iPhone 4S) with the iPhone 4S acting as server we were able to create 2 multi level structures and begin working on some caves that interconnect to the locations.

Jess love the game and has been able to navigate, select blocks and build just about anything she wants with ease. Ease is the word here, I neglected to say earlier but this version of the game is VERY bare bones which I think is why Jess is able to jump in a play it so well. Typically in minecraft universe you start off with nothing. Your first task is to hit a tree to get wood, then get enough of it to make sticks then planks then a crafting table so you can begin crafting. After which you being mining using your wood based tools until you fine stone then you mix your knowledge of wood based items to build better versions of what you made out of wood. Needless to say, this version skips all of that stuff and gives you some basics to use and that is it.
